This sprawling beer garden mixes three languages (Slav, English, and German) in its moniker. It was carved from an ancient factory on a Williamsburg side street, but zillions have discovered it, and the joint is packed by mid-evening. The list of 13 draft beers is a wonder of taste (our fave: Gaffel Kolsch, a crisp golden ale from Koln, Germany), but the food menu may leave you scratching your head. Scrapping the usual Buffalo wings and burgers, the abbreviated bill of fare is unusual, slightly upscale - and wonderful. The terrine mixing the livers of rabbits and chickens is superb, served with a plethora of toasts; while the roast quail in demi glace is the equal of any found in a fancy French restaurant. Vegetarians will dig the spinach palacinki (crepes) in a cheesy tomato sauce.

Sometimes you want to go out with a bang. Like, from year to year, when your "year" changes. That's when just any bar won't do. You need something on a mega-scale, a place that will fit hundreds (or 30) of your friends, with room for many, many more new ones. A place where you drink not out of glasses, but out of giant steins. A place where, if so inclined, you might do a jig, or push-ups on a picnic table, without a word to the contrary. Williamsburg's Radegast Hall & Biergarten is such... More »
Now that Americans have rediscovered what beer is supposed to taste like, is it any wonder that the traditional setting is coming back, too? Beer gardens are popping up across the land, but owners know there's something they have to avoid when they open a new facility: the feeling of newness itself. The more your beer garden feels like it's a place where people have been hoisting giant mugs of ale for centuries on end, the better. And that's why we adore Brooklyn's Radegast Hall and... More »
