Description

New Orleans' signature sandwich stars at this tidy, cheerful, Cajun and Creole Southern-style Portola hangout ambient with Carnival beads, zydeco, and that Mardi Gras spirit. A dozen varieties of po'boy (including deep-fried crawfish, catfish, and soft-shell crab in season) are served traditionally dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayo on half-foot and foot-long loaves of soft French bread. Don't miss out on Queen's Louisiana Po-=Boy Cafe's dark, rich, smoky gumbo. Beverages include cafe au lait with chicory and Abita pure-cane root beer; desserts are unimpressive.

  • 2010 | Best Gumbo

Finding a bowl of honest-to-God gumbo west of Sabine Lake is problematic, to say the least, but Queen's rendition is the real deal. Too many local attempts come off watery or lack the stimulating qualities that make gumbo the emblematic Louisiana dish. But Queen's starts with an especially rich, dark roux; layers the aromatic holy trinity of pepper, onion, and celery overtop; then deepens the flavors with scallions, plump shrimp, shards of crabmeat, and rounds of peppery sausage. The result... More »
