Quality Meats' "Rustic New American" cuisine seeks to undo the stereotype that traditional steakhouse in Midtown means boorish, bloody business for executives with unbridled company credit cards. Indeed, the menu features those classically gargantuan and juicy cuts for two (and it's plenty expensive), but it's rounded out by dishes that show finesse and high-concept: a deconstructed steak tartare mixed to taste at the table, buttered edamame with mint salt, roasted chicken accompanied by kumquats. The dedicated "charcuterie bar" also offers artisanal cheeses, and there's a impressive selection of oysters on the menu which will sate the folks making the short walk to Carnegie Hall from The Plaza. The dining room is a rich interpretation of farmhouse chic. Dark wood is illuminated by soft-glowing filament light bulbs that dangle from meat hooks, and a majestic marbled and bronzed cow heads poke out of the wall. It’s an excessive yet elegant celebration of all things beef. But the varied, creative menu proves there is plenty to enjoy and explore at Quality Meats, including Quality Cakes, the tres decadent, summertime-only ice cream cake bar. --Alex Spoto

It is, technically, an ice cream cake: Layers of cake and ice cream are crammed into a half-pint container, and then submerged beneath whipped topping, candy, and, for kicks, a white fondant cow. The thing comes in three varieties--the peanut butter,... More »
Tried this place when I was in NY last week and the food was great. If you can, share the rib-eye for 2 - it is one of the best steaks I've had. They have great sides as well - the gnocchi is their version of mac and cheese and is worth the indulgence. They have homemade ice cream for dessert if you have any room left.
