Robert Thompson has opened other restaurants before – everything from the long-gone Brasserie Rouge to Argyll to Le Grand Bistro & Oyster Bar – but Punch Bowl - Social Food & Drink is his most ambitious venture yet. More than two years after he signed a deal on the former Big Lots property at First and Broadway, Thompson opened his 24,000-square-foot gastro-diner, coffeehouse, lounge, bowling alley, throwback video arcade and game hang (complete with pool and ping-pong, shuffleboard, darts, pinball, foosball, marbles and board games) in November 2012. Although a limited menu is served throughout this eatertainment palace, the real food focus is in the diner, the 106-seat restaurant in front that starts serving at 7 a.m. (coffee’s on at 6), with breakfast running until 3 p.m. (plenty of time for an excellent egg sandwich or bananas Foster), followed by dinner and late-night options right up until last call. There's something for everyone here, including a truly rare commodity: parking out front...while it lasts.

People often ask why Westword's policy is to wait three months after a restaurant opens before going in for a review, rather than jumping in while the paint's still fresh. I'm sympathetic to the argum... More »
"Baby, it's not you, it's me." If that's the conversation coming up, then Punch Bowl -- Social is the place to walk the talk. This spot has all the bases covered: There's the parlor room with cushy sofas and chairs and dim lighting, so that you can hide your tears and bury your busted ego in one of the water-resistant leather armrests. The always-occupied bathrooms are an ideal refuge where you can seek solace from other jilted lovers. There are ping-pong tables -- with paddles, on... More »
