The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts seeks to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of art in the context of architecture. Docent-led tours are offered at 2 p.m. both days the foundation is open.
Color, or lack thereof, is a constant contemplation in all works of art. Artists often have complicated relationships with and views on the presenc...
Tracking the elusive arc of love from aspirational idealism to all-too-real dissolution, this ambitious three-venue exhibition (Lagos, Nigeria; Houston, Texas; and St. Louis) engages contemporary artists across cultures to investigate its... More »
In a particularly sweet spot in Grand Center, the one that's held down by the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, there's a bit of a yin-yang thing going on during this, the most love- and chocolate-filled... More »
The Progress of Love is a three venue, transatlantic exhibition in which contemporary African artists explore the meaning of the L-word in today's ever-changing global society. The emotional baggage has been scattered from city to city to city,... More »
New York-based Gedi Sibony translates his celebrated stock in trade — spare, elegant installations of found objects — into a curatorial strategy, selecting artworks from the Pulitzer family's collection and installing them in the Foundation's... More »
In April the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts (3716 Washington Boulevard; 314-754-1850 or www.pulitzerarts.org) marked its tenth anniversary with the opening of In the Still Epiphany, a special exhibit curated by New York artist Gedi Sibony that... More »
Contemplative serenity was made manifest in this exquisite collection of perfectly appointed Buddhist artifacts, spanning centuries of sacred tradition and cultural history. Curated by Francesca Herndon-Consagra, the exhibit operated like an expertly played piano sonata: Every individual (visual) note rang crisp, the mind and gaze were compelled in unexpected directions, and the concerted whole resolved as a deep and resonant chord. In the Pulitzer building, which Tadao Ando designed with... More »
The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts stays true to its name: "arts," plural. The curators are nothing if not multidisciplinary, incorporating poetry readings, theater and musical performances into exhibits of visual art. "Incorporate" is the right term; the foundation's mission has always been to blend the work on display with the building's architecture, and to direct the viewer's thinking to the community beyond the museum's walls. The result is a space that continually changes, cared for... More »
The building, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, is gorgeous. The exhibitions are rigorous and pitch-perfect, and often deal with light and space, capitalizing on Ando's minimal but essentialist design (witness this past year's Light Project, Dan Flavin: Constructed Light and Ideal (Dis)Placements: Old Masters at the Pulitzer). It's pure curation, generous and exacting (there's no text on the wall or supplemental material; just the implicit, elemental directive to look... More »
First, an honorable mention goes to the Schmidt Art Center on the campus of Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville. A small jewel of a space out near the cornfields, the Schmidt is well worth the trip out to the end of the MetroLink line. But let's face it: As much as we like to award recognition to the least-expected, the building Emily Pulitzer's money built in Midtown can't be designated an also-ran, no matter how snarly our inclinations. The first great work of architecture of the... More »
From the outside, Richard Serra's Cor-Ten-steel masterpiece "Joe" appears to list a bit to one side, like a stylish woman's hat or the prow of a ship. The sculpture is the vibrant stroke of burnished orange that glows next to the concrete Ando building and the gray-graveled ground. Step inside, and the walls teeter over you and the spiral passageway appears to contract and expand. In a certain light, they glow like desert-canyon walls. 'Round you go, touching the steel, which turns... More »
