If you need locally handcrafted glasses, knives, and cookware, head over to Practical Art in northern Phoenix. There you can find steak and chefs' knives crafted by Phoenician Lee Ziertan alongside natural-edge woodcutting boards hand-sanded and finished by James K. Rogers. There's no telling what local wares Practical Art might have for your kitchen at any given time: turned-wood rolling pins and salt cellars, ceramic oil pourers, forged iron cheese cutters, wood and glass bottle stoppers, wine bottle holders, blown-glass drinking glasses, and recycled glass coasters, plus other utensils and accouterments.

Yeah, I'm at this store a lot. Why? Well, it was founded by my dear friend, the late Jane Reddin. Lisa Olson and Kara Roschi have carried on Jane's mission to sell unique, practical art pieces made by local artisans with an emphasis on reclaimed materials. Moreover, they've imbued the place with "Community": lots of neat-o classes, book clubs and discussion groups, in addition to fun events like opening receptions for artists and the ever-popular "Pie Night." It's my go-to spot for cool corporate gifts and birthday presents that never disappoint.
From nationwide retailers like Bed, Bath & Beyond to restaurant suppliers like Standard Restaurant Supply, there's no shortage of places in the Valley to stock your kitchen cabinets and drawers with pots, pans, and utensils. But when you need locally handcrafted glasses, knives, and cookware, there's only one place to go: Practical Art. There you can find steak and chefs' knives crafted by Phoenician Lee Ziertan alongside natural-edge woodcutting boards hand-sanded and finished by James... More »
Ever been "finger-wagged" by one of those serious-as-cancer security guards at the Phoenix Art Museum? You know, you sneak in for a closer look at one of the paintings, and the guard is in your face, index finger zipping back and forth like a windshield wiper? Hey, it's their job; we get it. It's just a bit Big Bro for our taste. Our taste, in fact, runs more to the intimate and the hands-on, and that's why we love this gallery-slash-emporium, founded in 2007 by Jane Reddin, a retired...
