If there isn't a shrine to the deep fryer, there ought to be - and Porter's is the ideal location. The fried chicken might not receive as much buzz as other St. Louis institutions', but that's only because people are too busy eating it to talk about it. The breading is crisp, the meat is tender, and both are flavorful. The spicy breading packs a definite punch - but allow an extra ten to fifteen minutes for the kitchen to prepare it. The menu also includes seafood (cod, catfish, shrimp), burgers and a slew of sides.
OK, so our attempt to identify the most underrated restaurant for "sealing the deal" was a dud. No matter. We pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and move on to a matter of more universal importance... More »
Guess where I'm eating this open-faced fried-chicken sandwich (with gravy, obviously), and you could win a $10 gift certificate to Porter's Fried Chicken (3628 South Big Bend Boulevard, Maplewood; 314... More »
Today, July 6, is National Fried Chicken Day. So why don't you celebrate the festivities the only logical way: Eat some fried chicken! Yeah, yeah, we all know that Hodak's is the area's most famous fr... More »
Nothing fancy here. They serve your fried chicken in a plain white box whether you're eating in or taking it to go. No need for bells or whistles, really. This is as good as fried chicken gets in St. ... More »
Just disposed of $18 of chicken pre ordered, delivered late and dry. If you pre order as I have twice, in both cases the order was not ready. Pay after you recieve your order, not before as the first time I waited an additional 25 minutes. Spoke with the cook Steve, he denied they over cook or warm up chicken. This was 7/23/12 at 3:30pm. Along with the bucket of waste I paid for, the hour drive to and from at 103 degrees added insult to customer disservice and ignorance. Be careful with these guys, steve offered no apology or severence. Hope this helps some of you, KFC is around the corner.... Don
Pavlov's bell has nothing on Porter's fried chicken. As you step inside the unassuming strip-mall storefront, you can hardly keep yourself from drooling: The smell of breaded, deep-fried manna wafts out of the kitchen and from the plain white boxes on the dining tables. You can hardly wait — though if you order your chicken with the spicy breading, you must contain yourself an extra ten minutes or so. It's worth it, if you like a smack of peppery heat to accompany your crunchy (but not overly thick) breading and moist (but not too greasy) meat. Whichever breading you choose, be sure to grab a handful of extra napkins. That drooling is unsightly, if completely understandable.
Very good, cooked to order chicken. Flavorful and crispy not greasy like some of the chain chicken places. Reasonably priced.
