Description

This small, popular breakfast-and-lunch spot sometimes boasts a line-up, waiting to claim a spot for one of its excellent breakfasts or homey lunches. The very long diner-and-coffee-shop menu boasts, in addition to the expected egg-and-pancake breakfast offerings, such unexpected treats as linguiça, kielbasa, and chorizo as well as vegetarian sausage options; huge buttermilk biscuits with or without gravy; and such tony fillips as fresh spinach for your eggs Florentine. We loved the fried chicken, but other blue-plate specials include chicken-fried steak, pork chops and gravy, and roast turkey. There's an array of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and even Philly steaks and BBQ on offer.

    We love fried chicken both in its high form (a crisp breast at Chez Panisse) and its low (an order of the extra-spicy from Popeye's with a side of red beans and rice). But the best fried chicken we know is the honey-dipped served at the Pork Store (despite its name, which refers to the original inhabitant of the space, a butcher who'd been in residence from 1916 until the '50s).
