With a name more fit for an Eastern European dominatrix than an Indian restaurant, Polash debuted not long ago in a section of East Harlem that must have been frankly surprised at the appearance of such an establishment. The food is above average for a Punjabi restaurant, and the menu longer and more comprehensive. We went all-veggie with our meal, and the highlights included a fiery vegetable vindaloo, an agreeable dal papri (usually a chaat) turned into a lettuce-cushioned salad, a creamy rendition of navrattan kurma shot with dried fruit, a selection of flatbreads including a novel coconut poori that was more like an empanada, and a sizzling tandoori vegetable platter with plenty of caramelizing onions.
