Chef Andy Ricker brings us terrific, mostly traditional Thai food by way of Portland, Oregon. And yes, it's worth braving the notoriously long lines at Pok Pok Ny for these humble, exuberant dishes. Ricker's candy-crusted chicken wings may be famous, but be sure to explore the rest of the menu's treasures. Go for yam makheua yao, a neatly built flavor bomb of grilled eggplant, and the herb-happy salad of minced catfish with a beautifully balanced dressing. Cocktails doused with Japanese-style vinegars are a must-order.

The Smith and 9th streets subway station is closed, but don't let that stop you from hopping the B61 or walking over to Red Hook from nearby Carroll Gardens for a full, food-packed day. The grimy, somewhat isolated Brooklyn neighborhood has a small-town feel and some great eats all within a few blocks: Work your way down Van Brunt Street, starting with a Korean-American brunch at the Good Fork and excellent, reasonably priced cocktails at Fort Defiance. For an afternoon sweet, head to the... More »
At Andy Ricker's exuberant Thai restaurant in Brooklyn, forget about the famous candied chicken wings and deeply flavored curries, if just for a moment. Pok Pok NY's yam makheua yao is a beautiful flavor bomb of grilled eggplant with shallots, crispy garlic, and hard-boiled egg, dressed in lime and fish sauce. The dish is generously spicy and smoky, and on a tight budget, you could make a killer light meal of it with just a side of sticky rice. 127 Columbia Street, Brooklyn, 718-923-9322,... More »
