    Going Baddie

To paraphrase rapping wordsmith Nas, we chill by watching flicks where we can root for the villain. Sometimes the good guys are a little too squeaky-clean to be interesting. To our amusement, The Mad Scientist’s Guide to World Domination pulls... More »

    Wedded Blitz

Fairy tales teach little girls that handsome guys are desirable and romantic relationships always end in happily ever after. Barf. OJ Simpson and Scott Peterson, on the other hand, taught adults that sometimes the glass slipper comes in the form... More »

    Clue, Miss Drew?

If there's a more devoted fan or better-informed expert on spunky girl detective Nancy Drew than spunky girl attorney Jennifer Fisher, it only stands to reason that Fisher would have found that person by now. Fisher's taken her magnifying glass... More »

    Free Wheeling

It probably won't be a dark, stormy night rife with thugs and drama when James Sallis brings his latest noir novel to Poisoned Pen on April 3. But Driven, his follow-up to the acclaimed pulp novella Drive (which Nicolas Winding Refn adapted into... More »

  • Goof Troop

    Goof Troop

If comedy boils down to a simple equation -- tragedy plus time -- then syndicated humorist Dave Barry and television writer Alan Zweibel sure didn’t adhere to that level of simplicity when collaborating on their new novel Lunatics. (Although... More »

  • 2012 | Best Specialty Bookstore

When bookworms find themselves craving a literary thrill, we point them toward The Poisoned Pen. There are shelves of novels in the bookstore that will sate their appetite. But that's nothing new. Since 1989, the specialty store has offered up tales, some of which its sister press publishes, in niche genres such as mystery and thriller. But don't let that (or the unpleasant origins of its name) scare you off. The bound-paper purveyor provides a cordial place that's free of plot twists where... More »

  • 2011 | Best Specialty Bookstore

Some may consider us dinosaurs of the digital age, but we still love our bookstores, and we even mourned the loss of the Valley's Borders mega-stores. We especially love our handful of remaining independents, including this venerable (opened in 1989) and inviting little shop that sits one long block from the hustle and bustle of Scottsdale Road near Indian School Road. The name gives a big clue as to this store's leanings -- mysteries and crime novels. Also available are anything that... More »

  • 2008 | Best Place to Find Mystery

If Edgar Allan Poe were alive and a Phoenician, where would he buy his books? Probably at the Poisoned Pen, the Old Town Scottsdale home of all things mystery and fiction. If Edgar Allan Poe were alive and a Phoenician, where would he buy his books? Probably at the Poisoned Pen, the Old Town Scottsdale home of all things mystery and fiction. More likely, Poe would set foot in the Poisoned Pen during a book tour. After all, many of the best mystery authors in the U.S. visit this cozy little shop for book-signings. The Poisoned Pen boasts a competitive selection of fiction, from mainstream bestsellers to out-of-print titles and autographed first editions. It stocks a bevy of thrillers, historical fiction, sci-fi, and even a fair collection of nonfiction travel and food writing, too. The Poisoned Pen indulges book nerds with a number of frivolities, including weekly book-signings, writing workshops, the "coffee and crime club," and book-discussion nights. Even if you're not up for the coffee and crime club, you might want to peek inside. There's something delightful and old world about this little bookstore's stone exterior, corner location, and book-shelved walls.
