Description

A sign behind the bar commands patrons to "Drink Like An Adult," just above a list of their selection of American-bred whiskeys. In a neighborhood full of younger bars catering to trendier crowds, Poison Girl stands out for its maturity. It's the bar for when you grow out of dance nights and just want to drink something strong to unwind from working for the Man. Before the smoking ban passed, this place was a Marlboro-sponsored sauna. But PG expanded its back patio to accommodate the smokers and give the less-heartier lungs a break. On weekends, it is hard to find a place to sit, inside or on the patio. So come early to stake out a spot at one of the chalkboard tables, complete with a stick of chalk to do your filthy doodles. The row of pinball machines on the back wall is sure to pique your interest by beer three. We highly recommend the Family Guy game.

There's something about ordering whiskey inside of Poison Girl that just feels right. It goes with the blood-red walls and the foreboding metal sheet that rolls down and covers the door and one window during the day, completely obscuring the place along the busy Westheimer thoroughfare. Poison Girl (PG if you're texting) gets a nod from us for its diverse clientele, entertaining decor and alcohol-heavy drinks. You're as likely to see a local musician enjoying a cheap drink on the patio with a one-legged Cabbage Patch Kid as you are a lawyer playing vintage pinball and drinking high-quality whiskey. Poison Girl's got a strangely schizo feel to it. Inside, the narrow bar and hipster/rocker clientele reminds you of a dive in Brooklyn's Williamsburg or San Francisco's Mission District. Outside, though, the whole vibe shifts Texas-ward. You're as likely to see a local musician enjoying a cheap drink on the patio with a one-legged Cabbage Patch Kid as you are a lawyer playing vintage pinball and drinking high-quality whiskey. (Did somebody say "Scavenger Hunt?") But the pours aren't the only thing generous about this place � we give the owners added props for stirring cool with consciousness. Every first Sunday, a portion of sales is donated to a local nonprofit organization, and every last Thursday, they lend the patio to local writers for the Poison Pen Reading Series. If Rudyard's is Montrose's living room, then Poison Girl is its equally-as-cool basement bar.
