Since its inception in 1995, the Museum of Contemporary Art (770 NE 125th St., North Miami) has risen to the ranks of the top arts institutions in the nation thanks to the vision of its director and chief curator, Bonnie Clearwater. In addition to possessing a keen eye for burgeoning talent and having a finger on the pulse of the latest bleeding-edge art trends, Clearwater has left an indelible footprint on contemporary culture by helping launch the careers of local, national, and international talent and curating major retrospectives of some of the art world’s biggest names. Under her watch, MOCA, one of the few contemporary museums in the nation that actually collects art, has also amassed upward of 700 works in its brief history. Today the rapidly growing collection boasts everything from large-scale installations to painting, photography, sculpture, film, video, and every conceivable contemporary genre. To celebrate its imposing exhibition history and notable holdings, MOCA is presenting “Pivot Points: 15 Years and Counting,” a sprawling survey of works by artists including Rita Ackermann, Mark Handforth, Ragnar Kjartansson, Jonathan Meese, Malcolm Morley, Gabriel Orozco, Matthew Ritchie, and others who got their first major break at the museum and went on to donate works to its collection. “These artists were part of MOCA’s exhibition history, and now their works will be part of its lasting legacy,” says Clearwater, who has dedicated a section of the exhibit to homegrown talent, many of whom she gave their first-ever museum show.
