Description

Pilar might well be called the story of the young man and the seafood, for chef-owner Scott Fredel is not only an avid fisherman but also one who named his sleek Aventura eatery after Ernest Hemingway's boat. Not surprisingly, fish and shellfish are the stars here, whether a sizable crusty-creamy crab cake with red pepper tartar sauce, quickly seared scallops in a brothy citrus sauce with addictive onion strings, or fat fillet of salmon, slow-roasted to a delicate medium-rare and served atop truffled red potato salad. Desserts aren't a strong suit, so enjoy an espresso and after-dinner drink from the well-stocked bar.

    Scott Fredel opened this stylish contemporary American bistro in Aventura's sprawling Promenade Shops to show that white-tablecloth dining didn't have to come at white-knuckle prices. Four years later, he's made his point and then some. Sophisticated dishes such as slow-roasted salmon with truffled red potato salad and coarse-grained mustard sauce come in at a fistful of dollars less than at the tony South Beach eateries where Fredel used to cook, with all but a handful costing $20 or less. And the benefits of eating in a mall restaurant that doesn't look or act anything like a mall restaurant? Priceless.
