Phoenix New Times' Description

Valley sports stars of yesteryear live on at this Mesa tavern, which is like a museum of sorts dedicated to hometown heroes. Framed vintage photos of such luminaries as Frank Kush, Alvan Adams, and Dick Van Arsdale cover its wood-paneled walls from floor to ceiling. Maroon and gold fever also flows throughout the place, as myriad pennants and posters look down upon the Arizona State University faithful who gather in support of all the Sun Devil squads while enjoying the Woodshed's popular grilled wings and $2.50 domestic beers, $3.75 pitchers, and $4 well drinks. Speaking of spirits, the joint is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of a few of its former employees, making it a preferred haunt for both the living and the dead.

Merchant's Description

The year was 1979. The Steelers and Pirates were world champions. The Suns started 5 former all stars. The number one single was "My Sharona" by the Knack. ESPN was a fledgling network and sports bars with satellite television were about to become the rage replacing the brass and fern bars popular throughout the "Disco Era".

The Woodshed opened its doors that year and lead the way for the exciting new trend in good food and live sports action on multiple TV's. In fact The Woodshed was the first bar in the valley to feature satellite television. The first Buffalo style chicken wings in the valley were served at the Shed. We are now in our fourth decade of providing our customers with the "best wings in town". Their words, not ours. Other firsts include ESPN cable and CD jukeboxes.

Come and see for yourself at either of our locations a true Arizona classic. Great food and drinks, friendly old school service in a casual setting surrounded by by flat screens and walls covered with decades of sports memorabilia.

We've been going to the Woodshed II for more than a decade and, we gotta admit, we never tire of this way-off-the-radar, low-key dive. The location is in a dimly lit strip on the northwest corner of Dobson Road and University Drive that looks as though it's been abandoned for 20 years. Inside, signed photographs from professional athletes and autographed pennants by Sun Devil... More >>

Don't like to discourage, BUT don't come here during karaoke night. It doesn't seem to "run smoothly" and the non-karaoke people like to hate....

The food is always good. The beer selection is above average. I like this bar and I have been coming here for 21 years.
