Phoenix New Times' Description
When the hole in your stomach is too big for a tiny taco to fill, make way for the mighty torta. The Mexican take on a sandwich is at its best at Tortas Paquime, which has five locations in Phoenix and Avondale. Rather than cold cuts, hot-from-the-grill carne asada, milanesa, and cochinita are piled atop a toasted telera roll with fresh avocado, jalapeno, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Perhaps the tastiest combo is the Torta Ahogada, thanks to a homemade chile tomato sauce that makes the sandwich so much more than the sum of its parts. The local chain also serves excellent flautas, tacos, tostadas, and antojitos like cueritos (pickles pork rinds) and elotes (corn off the cob with mayo, cheese, lime, and chili), and it has a full dessert menu with ice cream, raspados, paletas, and postres like flan, escamochas (fruit salad with cream and granola), and pay de queso.
