Sa Bai Modern Thai
Phoenix, AZ 85018
Phoenix New Times' Description
What used to be a Wendy's fast-food restaurant has been converted successfully into a tasteful, tranquil Thai eatery, complete with a full bar. Service can be spotty, but the food delivers on almost all fronts, whether it's a handful of spicy curry dishes (especially the seafood green curry) or modern takes on old standbys such as pad Thai or fried rice. Sa Bai's signature sauces are bursting with flavor and really kick up a notch such delicious appetizers like crab wonton rolls and satay. Salads and soups may not pack the punch of the Valley's more traditional Thai joints, but there is more than plenty of entrees to love on SaBai's menu.
I love Thai. This was a really bland version of Thai. At first glance, you can tell the place used to be a Wendy's, but they did a great job covering it up. The atmosphere is nice, we were hopeful. I love Thai. This was a really bland version of Thai. At first glance, you can tell the place used to be a Wendy's, but they did a great job covering it up. The atmosphere is nice, we were hopeful. We started out with the Satay for an appetizer and we were impressed. The addition to curry on the chicken was interesting and the peanut sauce was great. They brought out our daughters and my wife's dish first. Daughter ordered Pas See-uie and my wife ordered Casher Chicken (medium spicy) and they where able to accommodate Gluten Free. My Pad Prik King came out ten minutes later. I ordered that hot. The food, for the most part was bland. Not the ingredient popping flavor that we expected in Thai. My "hot" Pad Prik King had no heat at all. Overall, nothing BAD about the flavor... just flavor lacking in terms of Thai. Bummed there was no Panang (or many curry options) on the menu as well. sad to say we had high hopes as many have reviewed this place and said it was great. For us, it was meh. If we want Thai, we want a lot of flavor. This is a very watered down American version of Thai food. More like a Thai-lite or Chinese-Thai place.
Tips from foursquare
My vegetarian brethren: they will substitute tofu and/or vegetables for any of the meats.
Try the crab wontons! They're made fresh in the restaurant with real crab. The service is good and they cook is very accommodating.
The Tom-Yum soup is the best in the valley.
Try the Red Curry with Chicken and Mixed Vegetables - Just what I needed! (via @Foodspotting)
