Phoenix New Times' Description

Tired of Mexican food? There’s a whole wide world of other Latin American cuisines to explore. Mi Comida Restaurante Latino is an Ecuadorean restaurant, but the menu also has dishes from Bolivia, Venezuela, and Peru. Sango de camarones (delicious shrimp stew) is homey and comforting when it’s cold outside, and the taste of sudado de pesado (banana leaf-wrapped fish) will make sweltering summer feel more like a seaside retreat. If you’re feeling a little skittish about the unfamiliar entrées, the North Phoenix restaurant also has empanadas, ceviche, and tamales. Although the tamales are wrapped in banana leaves rather than corn husks, they’re just as addictive as the Mexican version when smothered in kicky salsa made from the South American aji chile. And who doesn’t love steak? Carnivores will love the lomo fino saltado (filet mignon sauté). To wash it all down, have a sweet and frothy guanabana batido “shake” or an authentic chicha morada. A little like Kool-Aid, the fruity purple corn beverage is packed with vitamins.

For those, you might have to search a little harder, but the effort's worth it. Our favorite stop is Mi Cocina Mi País, a strip mall gem that serves up homestyle dishes from Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia in a happy orange dining room draped... More >>
