Phoenix New Times' Description

They threw in everything but the kitchen sink with La Tolteca, which is a bakery, restaurant, and market all in one. Whether you work or study nearby, have to stick to a budget, or simply like to explore ethnic cuisines, it's a don't-miss stop within a stonesthrow of downtown. Pick up some pan dulce from the panaderĂa, stock your pantry in the grocery area, and get an eyeful of the sprawling menu at the counter. We're fans of the decadent chilaquiles, overstuffed carne asada tortas, and sopes heaped with juicy pastor (spiced pork). Get it to go, or hang out in the colorful mural-filled dining room.

The Chile Relleno Burro is my favorite. All Tacos have nice flavor and service in quick. Be adventurous and try a Tripa Taco. My Favorites from the Self serve Bakery area include Empanadas filled with Sweet Potatoes and Mexican Bread Pudding which is different then the American Style. Ask the attendant to point it out.

This place has delicious homemade mex. food. Chips are even tasty. The el pastor was excellent. Their beans are homemade along with delicious salsa, chucky and not too spicy, although i did request another one that was spicy and it wasn't as tasty. I loved the market too, the flour tortillas were 100% better than what you can get in any store. I'm from San Diego,ca so I'm pretty... More >>

The prices for what you get here are a good deal but I find the food mediocre. The first time I was here I ordered a chicken burrito and it tasted like tons of vegetable oil and the meat looked a bit pink. I came back and got beef nachos and had a better experience than with the chicken (and the portions were so large I couldn't finish my nachos) but it was still meh.

Best of Phoenix Winner 2011: Best PanaderĂa. The dulce de leche churros (sugary cinnamon sticks with sweet caramel), handmade tortillas, cakes, cookies, & other baked goods are to die for.

You can never go wrong with the carne asada torta. Everyone is friendly, so if you're feeling adventurous on trying something new just ask.
