Phoenix New Times' Description

The Mexico City-style food at Gallo Blanco, the Clarendon's in-house eatery, is casual and unpretentious, with dirt-cheap prices to match. What isn't obvious until you taste it, though, is the thoughtful preparation and great ingredients that make it so addicting. Chef-owner Doug Robson's big on local purveyors, and he doesn't overlook the details that elevate the dining experience. From made-to-order tortillas to charred tomato Bloody Marys, everything gets a little extra oomph. Try the tender marinated pork cochinita - served as a taco or a torta - and don't miss the inspired crepas con cajeta, crepes slathered in luscious caramel sauce, sliced bananas, and whipped crema fresca. You might eat yourself into a food coma, but hey, you can always check into the hotel if the mood strikes.

This place has some amazing veggie tacos filled with grilled veggies, queso fresco and guac. They're only $2 a piece but they're small (street taco style) so you'll need around 3 to fill up - still a great deal. I love pretty much any form of sweet potato fries, so I definitely suggest you get an order as a side or app. Dig into the aioli it comes with - it's delicious.

Tips from foursquare

Named one of our 2010 Best Restaurants! We love that they serve breakfast all day - order the outrageously delicious huevos rancheros. The patio is the perfect spot to sip sangria.

Pro tip: ask for the sauces, there's a chili sauce & a tomatillo

  • Andrew K. on 07/28/09

Order the Elote and a Naco Torta, and clean your plate. (no leftovers!)

  • Ben B. on 10/21/11

Mmmmm... Here's a tip, for something fun or romantic, get your food to go & take up to the rooftop skydeck or pool area next to waterwall!

    Elote! Elote! Elote!
