Thousands of wild beasts on the hoof, including many endangered species, roam this menagerie in otherworldly Papago Park.
Our holiday weather doesn’t get all that frightful, but even without snow the Valley’s premier winter wonderland experience, ZooLights, keeps things delightful. Catch the latest twist on the festive illumination of the Phoenix Zoo starting... More »
Phoenicians have much to envy about winters on the East Coast. Pretty much all holiday imagery, from snow to pine trees, originates in colder climates. Hollywood would have you believe the holidays are about wool coats, fuzzy gloves, hot cocoa... More »

Allow us to nip your first question right in the bud: No, the pair of Komodo dragons currently residing at the Phoenix Zoo are not related to the winged serpent of legend in any way. Nor do they breathe fire, although their bite is considered to be quite toxic. Sadly, the only commonality (other than the whole scales thing) is that, as a protected species, the Komodo dragon possibly could wind up being just as invisible as the mythical beasties. There are about 50 in captivity around the... More »
Our Phoenix Zoo membership has served us well for years, but our visits were becoming less frequent in the past couple of years as the kids grew older. From the exhibits to the splash playground to the carousel, we've been there and done that -- a lot. But this year, we decided to take the Phoenix Zoo up on its standing offer to bring our bicycles. (Rollerblades, skateboards and Razor scooters still aren't allowed.) Just like that, the zoo became a fresh experience. Our littlest still... More »
Every Thanksgiving, the Phoenix Zoo kicks off several weeks of enchanted evenings with the opening night of ZooLights. The event, a quintessential "Phoenix thing," raises funds for wildlife conservation and children's programming at the zoo, and it's a nice, quiet way to decompress one more time before the holiday frenzy. The landscaping and lagoons are charming. The light displays are ooh-inspiring. There's stuff for the whole family to enjoy, like camel rides, animal presentations, and a... More »
At the risk of sounding like a shill for the zoo, to really appreciate the place you need to buy a membership. We have a fantastic zoo here in Phoenix, but when you just buy tickets on a per-visit basis, you feel like you have to see ALL of it to justify the cost, and there's a LOT of zoo to see, especially when it's 100 degrees out. When you have a membership, you can go and just check out a single exhibit, or have lunch while laughing at monkey island, whatever - and it makes for a much more fulfilling and enjoyable zoo experience. You'll have a far better time going for 6 or 8 short visits in a year than one single long one.
A zoo is a zoo right? Wrong! this place is amazing! it has bushes and such that remind me of edward scissorhands! amazing! but I always love to see the monkeys!
