Description

Don’t let the name fool you. Philthy Phil’s may sound sleazy, but this joint is a righteous place for a good time. Equal parts neighborhood dive bar and hipster hang, Phil’s features cheap drinks poured hard. Depending on the evening, you’ll encounter DJs spinning everything from hair metal power ballads to electro-funk. Its namesake owner – who also works as a bartender – has a way of graciously making the lively mix of patrons feel welcome and has a reputation for joining in on the fun. He also has a soft spot for the downtrodden (he lets his bouncer park his RV in the back lot), though he’s known to use a firm hand with rabble that tries to stir up the sort of trouble that slows the pouring of libations.

  • 2010 | Best Dance Night

Some clubs have bikini-clad girls dancing on pedestals. Others book touring DJs who are "big in London." And most are decked out with mirrored walls and flashing lights. And with a teeny dance floor, it only takes about 10 people to fill it -- you'll never feel alone or awkward. More »

An orphan from Detroit, Phil grew up the hard way. And while there's a scrappiness about him (he 86s anyone making trouble, especially in defense of the ladies who are drinking at his bar), his gracious way of making his lively mix of patrons feel welcome is infectious, carrying over to his friendly staff. With a hard pour, a... More »

  • 2009 | Best Neighborhood Bar, Downtown Phoenix

Don't let the name fool you, as this watering hole on the edge of downtown Phoenix is actually pretty clean (well, as far as dive bars go). Frankly, the dirtiest thing here is the longshoreman-grade obscenities we've heard coming from regulars who are as colorful as the décor. Besides a few murals depicting an array of funky blues artists lining the walls, there are also numerous neon beer signs, an ancient Simpsons pinball machine, and even a deer head wearing a thrift store-worthy...
