Description

Of all Pete Contos's places, Pete's Kitchen has the most character, the best insomniac street-theater vibe. While this Colfax institution is open 24/7, it's at its best just after 1 a.m. -- because by 2 a.m., there's often a line stretching out the door and down the block. No matter what time you go, though, dining at Pete's is never dull. The avgolemono is good, the burritos legendary for their curative powers and the crowds as hinky as it gets.

    Get a Job!

    Thu, April 19, 2007

The wee hours of the weekends can get pretty rowdy on Colfax, but Pete's Kitchen has a not-so-secret weapon: Denver Police detective John White, who serves as spokesman for the department when he's not moonlighting at Pete's. One recent Friday,... More »

    Pete's Kitchen

I have seen many things at Pete's Kitchen. I've witnessed fights and the first tentative, groping moments of new (and no doubt highly temporary) love affairs. I've eaten shoulder-to-shoulder with famous folk, sprung for dinner for bums and had a... More »

A study released last week by the big brains at the Brookhaven National Laboratory has finally proven something I've known all along: Bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches are addictive. Like cigarettes, heroin and reruns of the original Star Trek,... More »

  • 2011 | Best Pete's Restaurant

Morning, noon and night -- and way past midnight -- this iconic East Colfax institution, illuminated with fluorescents, hums with the melodic chatter of bankers, beatniks, bikers and buggy-eyed drunks, all of whom co-exist in hungry harmony, tucking into gigantic plates tricked out with slabs of bacon, well-seasoned sausages, flapjacks, omelets and mounds of hash browns glistening with gobs of butter. Pete's Kitchen is a joint that's great for a late-night group romp when you're... More »

  • 2004 | Best Breakfast at 2 a.m.

If you sometimes find yourself wandering the city's grayer quarters at odd hours, looking for a place to come down, sober up or just think those kinds of thoughts that come best in the middle of the night, then head straight for Pete's Kitchen. This year, everyone's favorite breakfast spot made the jump from being a weekend-only all-night destination to a 24/7 outpost for Denver's party boys, vampires and insomniacs. Which means you can now get a strong cup of bottomless coffee, a fix of... More »

  • 2004 | Best Breakfast Burrito

A truly great breakfast burrito must be three things: It must be big, it must be messy, and it must be capable of curing anything from a simple hangover to Patagonian skull fever in just one serving. At Pete's, the kitchen makes a breakfast burrito that accomplishes all three admirably. First, this burrito is huge -- a big tortilla, liberally stuffed with potatoes and a simple omelet of meat (bacon, sausage or ham) and two eggs, large enough to fill an entire platter end to end. Second, it's... More »

  • 2003 | Best Breakfast at 2 a.m.

For those with a serious case of insomnia, Pete's Kitchen is like the land of the midnight sun. No matter what the clock says, on the weekends you can always rise and shine with breakfast at Pete's, a late-night oasis serving a unique blend of Greek, gringo-Mexican and American dive cuisine -- griddle-fried eggs, homemade pies, excellent gyros cut from a giant meat stick rotating in front of the grill -- to drunks, punks, suits and fruits in equal measure. The poised and patient waitstaff... More »
