Every year, this venerable Brooklyn steakhouse (it's been open since 1887) enters the conversation about who has the best steak in New York City. Credit for that goes to its porterhouse for two, a mammoth serving of dry-aged beef, buttered, charred and dripping with juices. Of course, if you're not willing to drop a day's wages on a meal, the famed Luger Burger (a hulking beef patty, onions and American cheese on a sesame seed bun, available with a side of almost comically thick bacon) is a good option. It's only available during lunch, when the corporate crowd fills the restaurant's two stories equipped with company cards. If you want a dinner reservation, it's best to call about a month in advance. Older men in suits and women in dresses arrive at night, handing their keys to the valet before heading inside. The beef is dry aged and tender as a dying lover's kiss, which means it has a funkiness and a minerality that only perfect aging can confe... More »
When it arrives, it doesn't look too impressive--the seeded bun, barely big enough to contain the meat, is squished, and when you lift the lid, the burger is dressed with a single slice of raw onion. No lettuce, no tomato. But when you bite into the burger at PETER LUGER (lunch only), the rush of flavor is like you've just injected 500 mikes of premium LSD. At $5.95, it's one of the best deals in town. Ask for mashed potatoes instead of fries. More »
The BEST steakhouse by far... in the COUNTRY.
The best steaks in New York, a Williamsburg landmark.
I love these old school steakhouses.
When fall rolls around, the song "Autumn in New York" gets stuck in my head like a movie soundtrack. Sentimental, yes, but it perfectly evokes the reason we love our city, with its mixture of joy and pain, hope and despair, beauty and ugliness.... More »
