This Houston fine-dining import began life as a butcher shop in 1979. Since then, Chris Perry, son of founder Bob Perry, has opened eight other Texas locations. Among them is this Uptown branch adjacent to the Ritz Carlton Hotel. The restaurant's name speaks to bricks of buttery filet mignon and rib-eyes. Those are certainly available, the former topped with crab meat. Perry's signature protein, however, is its famous pork chop, amply served at a reduced price for lunch on Pork Chop Fridays. Whether you're seated in the seven-table wine cellar or one of the main dining rooms, the beef ordered in this elegant, earth-toned establishment is hand-selected, USDA prime and dry-aged for 28 days. Just don't confuse it with the original Dallas-based Perry's Steakhouse, which was forced to change its name to the Place at Perry's when the Houston export came to town.
Perry's Steakhouse, which I praised in last week's Dish column, isn't typically associated with dainty portions. On Fridays, when mammoth pork chops are sold for just $10.95, the exiting crowds, armed... More »
When I first arrived in Dallas, I lobbed the same culinary questions at anyone who'd admit to having eaten out: Which local farm gets all the menu play? Who makes the best pizza? Where can I get a decent bagel-and-lox plate? And is there a... More »
Although opening day is weeks away, the folks at Perry's Steakhouse gave us a glimpse yesterday of the Houston-based chain's first location in Dallas. Set in the flashy 2000 McKinney Avenue high rise... More »
Imagine a film set in the badlands of Japanese cattle country. Our movie follows a bunch of tough hombres--John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Randolph Scott--fending off Mothra and the occasional kamikaze, massaging the herd after a few beers and... More »
Americans love steak. Well, nobody could afford it in the 1930s, and the government rationed steak in the '40s. In the 1970s, Californians took over cuisine, substituting tofu and such for red meat. And in the '80s we considered it a deadly,... More »
After successful endeavors in Houston and Austin, Perry's (not to be confused with The Place at Perry's) finally found its way to Dallas in April, adding yet another upscale steakhouse to a crowded market, not to mention another restaurant named Perry's. While we've found plenty of reasons to dine at Perry's regularly, no menu item has us coming back as often as its turtle soup, which is hard to find anywhere, much less a bowl this tasty. For those unfamiliar with the delicacy, turtle soup... More »
Go to any farm within 100 miles of Dallas on any Friday before lunch and you will witness high anxiety stirring within the pig population. That's when Perry's begins serving its massive pork chop special, where men, mostly, even those who attempt to follow the dietary laws of their religion, can't resist the hot off the grill, cured, roasted and rubbed flavor of three or so huge hunks of pork flesh and bone. Each is big enough to choke a horse (sorry for the mixed husbandry metaphor). The... More »
