Before the Pepsi Center was built in 1999, the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche played their games in McNichols Arena (which has since been razed to complete a parking lot for the football stadium). It was more than time for a new venue; McNichols did the trick for nearly a quarter-century, but the facility desperately needed updating, and an update is exactly what the city got with the Pepsi Center. Besides the Nuggets and the Avs, it’s home to the Colorado Mammoth, Denver’s professional lacrosse team, and frequently hosts NCAA tournaments. On the other end of the entertainment spectrum, the Pepsi Center is the go-to venue for large-scale concerts (Roger Waters and Madonna have both played there, to name just a couple) in town. Located conveniently close to downtown Denver and the Auraria campus, the center also offers free facility tours on a regular basis.
You probably aren't cool enough to get backstage passes to concerts at the Pepsi Center, and you're probably not rich enough to recline in the luxu...

As long as goals are still a good thing in lacrosse, then John Grant Jr. is not only the best Mammoth, but the best player in the entire National Lacrosse League. He currently leads the league in points, goals and power-play goals, and is third in assists. In fact, he may be the biggest reason the Mammoth own the best record in the NLL.Readers' Choice: John Gallant More »
A lot was expected of the number-two overall pick in the NHL draft, but few people were counting on the kind of performance that the Swedish-born Gabriel Landeskog has turned in. The lefty is in the top five in most offensive categories among rookies and second on the team in points. In March, he was named the NHL's top rookie. He also provides hope, which we will gladly traffic in. The Avs have lacked a star since Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg began to fade. The talented winger is only... More »
Hockey doesn't get as much attention as other professional sports in this town, but not because of a lack of passion, something that is always on display when Peter McNab and his broadcast partner, play-by-play man Mike Haynes, get together. Haynes usually gets a lot of props -- he's won this award several times -- and deservedly so. But McNab should earn equal praise for a balanced blend of intelligent insight and enthusiasm. He references his esteemed playing career without... More »
He beat cancer for the second time. He resisted the urge to blast Carmelo Anthony for demanding a trade and being a season-long distraction. He signed a new contract and he's kept the Nuggets in playoff position despite the Melodrama and integrated the new players into the team to the tune of a 5-1 start post-Melo. This season was ripe for implosion, but Karl deserves some credit for keeping that from happening. More »
It's a tough time to be a Denver Nugget. Carmelo Anthony, possibly the best player in franchise history, and hometown hero Chauncey Billups were recently traded to New York for good but not great players, cash and draft picks. We wish the 6'11" center would rebound and block shots at a higher rate, but Nenê is a presence, and he's resilient. He leads the league in field-goal percentage and is generally efficient. He's a team player -- and that's exactly what the Nuggets need right... More »
The drawn-out drama leading up to the February trade of Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks had several downsides. Among them: the loss of Lala Vazquez, Anthony's wife and one of Denver's only VH1 reality-TV stars, and the even more heartbreaking loss of Chauncey Billups, who was ripped away in the deal. But the upsides include Knick-turned-Nugget Wilson Chandler, a young 6'8" forward with "Unstoppable" tattooed across his upper back and the game to match. Chandler started his time in... More »
Since the Colorado Avalanche, once the toast of the town, has made a precipitous slide from playoff contention to Western Conference bottom-feeders, we have to look for potential for the future, and Matt Duchene, the twenty-year-old former third overall pick, still represents that. The young forward made the All-Star team this year -- and he also pulls off the entertaining "bang-bang" celebration with Paul Stastny when they do score goals. More »
Somewhere in our collective dreams, there is a time when handing out this award will require some beer-fueled debate. Not this year. While the Rox will surely compete for a playoff spot, the Nuggets are the leading contender to overthrow the Lakers in the West, and they've hinted at an ability to do so by beating L.A. twice already this season. They have all the pieces: The star (Carmelo), the gritty veteran leader (Chauncey), the crazy person (J.R.), the other crazy person (Kenyon), and the... More »
It'd be amusing to choose someone else here. It'd also be wrong. Carmelo Anthony not only is a lock for Best Nugget, he's among the best in the league, and he's emerged as the NBA's best pure scorer. His offensive arsenal -- jump shot, penetration, post-game and the like -- is the most versatile in the league, and he long ago deserved to strip the title of Mr. Big Shot from teammate Chauncey Billups. Basketball isn't an individual game -- or at least not at its best. But the addition of a single player can make an enormous difference, as Chauncey Billups proved when he joined the Nuggets early this season. In a matter of days, the Nugs were defending better, sharing the ball more often, passing up contested shots to get their teammates better ones, demonstrating discipline rather than a lack thereof, and generally playing like a team. Granted, he's not a miracle worker, as a... More »
True, we'd feel better about praising the Nuggets if the NBA season ended at the halfway point. That way, we could focus on the glorious addition of Chauncey Billups, the belated blossoming of Nene, the return of Kenyon Martin to his pre-Nugs form, the unexpected contributions from players such as Chris "Birdman" Andersen, and so on. After the All-Star break, though, the crew temporarily slipped back to its old ways -- especially the ultra-talented Carmelo Anthony, whose game seems to... More »
The decision by Denver Nuggets management to deal Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons early in the season could have resulted in catastrophe -- especially considering that defensive leader Marcus Camby had previously been jettisoned in a salary dump. But thanks to a big assist from Chauncey Billups, who's proved to be the real answer for the team, coach George Karl managed to fuse the players at his disposal into a unit far more cohesive than the one that chalked up fifty wins the year... It takes a lot to admit you're wrong, but that's what Nuggets GM Mark Warkentien did when he wisely shipped career chemistry-killer Allen Iverson to Detroit in exchange for Denver native Chauncey Billups. Iverson, whom Warkentien brought to the team in December 2006, has helped sink the Pistons. Billups -- calm, accurate, and willing to play defense and pass -- has helped make the Nuggets relevant. That move, and that move alone, makes Warkentien the best of Denver's sports suits. More »
Talk about dramatic turnarounds. When hard-nosed George Karl, late of the Milwaukee Bucks and the Seattle Sonics, took over as the Denver Nuggets' head coach on January 27, they had a dismal 17-25 record under fired Jeff Bzdelik and fill-in Michael Cooper, and fans had begun to boo the lackluster efforts of highly paid stars like Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby. Since then, though, the resurgent Nugs have played 18-5 ball, and they've apparently nailed down a Western Conference playoff... More »
