Pearl Bar seems like the old guard of Washington Avenue haunts at this point, originally opening in the old Mary Jane’s/Fat Cat space what feels like eons ago and ushering in the wave of new drinkeries that swept onto the strip. There’s lots of room for dancing, and the long bar has plenty of space for customers to order up their drink of choice. When the music or the crowd becomes too much to handle, just spill out onto the large back patio for some fresh air. Currently Pearl Bar is only open Friday and Saturday, with plans to add Sundays this coming April.
According to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts' office, Pearl Bar owes more than $40,000 in mixed-beverage and franchise taxes, and agents confiscated some cash as part of a "limited seizure" o... More »

A quick cure for headaches, heartaches or boredom is Sunday-afternoon cocktails at a laid-back, friendly bar with super-cool friends. I proved this theory on a recent sunny Sunday at the Pearl Bar (4216 Washington Ave., 713-868-5337) with new... More »
Yes, we know we gave them this award last year. But Pearl Bar has undergone major renovations since 2007, and you might say, well, it's like a whole new bar. The place that started as an open-every-now-and-then patio bar is now up and running both indoors and out. The inside makes it hard to believe the building once hosted some of the dirtiest bands around town when it was Mary Jane's Fat Cat. The latest decor screams Midtown, but the bartenders maintain the old-Washington vibes. On any given night you'll find a mix of dolled-up singles looking for a new mate and drabby-dressed friends meeting up to play cards, shuffleboard or ping-pong.

The antithesis of all the trendy lounges catering to the fickle 400 that come and go every year, Pearl Bar is in it for the long haul. Right now, it's just a beer garden with an icehouse vibe behind what once was Mary Jane's. A few picnic tables are scattered about, along with low-tech games like ping-pong and hula-hooping, but Montrose/Heights hipsters flock here to consume the bar's namesake beer -- Pearl goes for a mere two bucks a can. The management hopes to roll their profits into... More »
Montrose-area bar patrons have been delighted to have this man pouring their hooch for years now. Many claim he makes the meanest margaritas this city has to offer. Others claim that his famous Bloody Marys have the healing powers of black magic. Whether that's true or not, Moore will greet you with a smile, remember your name and most likely remember your drink of choice, just as you like it. These days you can find him at Pearl Bar, where he'd love to talk with you over a beer about old... More »
