Before the Meatpacking District transformed into New York's version of South Beach, Keith McNally (Balthazar, Minetta Tavern) took a chance on a neighborhood that was a little rough around the edges. It paid off big time; now his flawlessly stylish faux-Paris bistro is almost always at capacity, filled with European tourists, fashion industry types and others of the air-kissing tribes. All of the McNally design elements are here: the white subway tile, the back-lit bottles, the pressed-tin ceiling. Grab a marble-topped table and experience the bustling scene inside or sit on the sidewalk patio to watch the moneyed masses parade by. Classic bistro fare (think steak frites and skate au beurre noir) is complemented by lighter dishes such as a seared tuna nicoise salad and a sliced steak sandwich with onions and gruyere. If you're looking for a little less of a scene, stop by for breakfast during the week, where you can eat a full English breakfast (two eggs, bacon, fried bread, Cumberland sausage, mushrooms, beans and fried tomatoes) in relative peace before the jet set gets out of bed.—Keith Wagstaff
No correct guesses yet to where I was eating this past week. It's not Westville or Pastis. The joint opened in 2010 and features an extensive beer menu and by-the-book pub snacks like spinach and arti... More »

Restaurants that mimic Parisian bistros have become so commonplace downtown that we hardly notice when a new one pops up. I've always found certain aspects annoyingthe pseudoantique advertising plac- ards, predictable menus, haughty waiters, and... More »
Great french bistro in downtown New york. Steak and Fries is a must. Fun place to people watch as well.
I love this restaurant for brunch or lunch - and it's the kind of place where you feel almost obligated to have a glass of wine even though the sun's still out. Oysters, steak frites, brioche french toast... ah, c'est magnifique! Always bustling and noisy with accents from all over - great place to see beautiful people and gab with friends.
A strong case can be made to New Jersey Transit for putting a PATH stop right on Gansevoort. The meatpacking district could certainly fund the effort through a "quarter at the door" tax. Better yet, maybe the train should cut to the chase and let out directly under PASTIS, Mr. McNally's seminal bistro which, when relatively quiet on, say, a Tuesday afternoon, cannot be beat for food and atmosphere. Enter the place at night, though--any night--and be prepared to interrupt your... More »
Like a scene from Moulin Rouge, PASTIS has always crackled with guilty pleasures: flowing wine, juicy burgers, baskets of thick bread, salty fries. And cigarettes. Let's face it: When smoking looks cool, it looks really cool, and nowhere did it look more fabulous than at Pastis. Now, without that familiar haze curling into the ceiling, things seem more sanitized and a little less soigné. Sigh. At least there's still brunch with Ethan and Uma. More »
Look to the French to "kick it up a notch." The croque monsieur at PASTIS is a thing of beauty, starting with an orotund slice from a Balthazar loaf layered with good ham, Gruyère, and clouds of béchamel, then slung under the broiler till the open face is bubbly brown. Fold it over and try to eat it--I usually end up using a fork. Add a fried egg to the mix and call it a croque madame. More »
Few things evoke the taste of the Mediterranean more than properly grilled sardines. Charred until the skin is silvery crisp and succulent and sweet inside, they are the stuff of seaside joints from Marseilles to Casablanca. Pastis captures this taste with two splayed fish atop a bed of bite-y arugula that masquerade as an appetizer but are really a taste memory of a Mediterranean summer. More »
