Park Ave in Stanton serves retro American cuisine. The Googie architecture, the swank Rat Pack-inspired interior, the homemade ketchup and the on-site garden wow everyone that goes. Park Avenue seems to favor more rustic loaves and savory crispy planks of toast sliced from a French baguette covered with black pepper and herbs. A “fresh clipped” salad of beet leaves, red oak, arugula and mizuna that’s usually available year-round might be the only dish in OC that lives up to the title “garden salad:” It actually came from Slay’s garden out back. And after you’re done eating, make sure to stroll outside, not just in the lawn but in the garden and its sister restaurant, Il Garage, that is actually inside a turn-of the-century garage. And if there’s an antelope steak on the menu, order it: it has an grassy note and an ultra-lean cleanliness on the palate. (Think of the red meat as beef with a personal trainer.)
Half of what makes the martini at Park Avenue is the atmosphere; the tiny, Googie-style bar wedged into the front of Stanton's best restaurant makes you want to dust off the skinny ties and plastic, square-rimmed eyeglasses. Sit down and actually discuss what you want in a martini with the distinguished bartender. If you want a classic variety--gin, vermouth and bitters--he can do that, and if you're still on ice-cold vodka with three olives, well, he can do that, too. More »
