After an American culinary student found love with a butcher in Paris, the married couple moved to New York and opened a cafe in the East Village inspired by their time in the city of love: grilled sandwiches like goat cheese and avocado spread on multi-grain bread, and roasted butternut squash with sauce cert, fontina and Parmesan on ciabatta, plus a classic croque monsieur. Muffins, bagels, and quiches are always available with fair trade cups of coffee. Paradis is to-go for a reason. With its rotating menu of soups, salads, and sandwiches, Paradis To-Go is something of a lunchtime oasis for Union Square desk jockeys. It's also home to the best spinach pie in Manhattan. About the same diameter as a 45, the pie is comprised of a thick coil of phyllo dough that's been stuffed, tunnel-of-fudge-style, with an excess of well-seasoned puréed spinach.
