There has to be a reason to brave these lines--even on a particularly crummy Saturday afternoon--and it's the fajita plates, big enough to choke a Chihuahua. Beef fajitas, perfectly tender (not tenderized) and abundantly spiced, are the best we've tried in Dallas. Another standout is the chicken fajitas and quail (served together), the latter of which is a couple of butterflied birds in a slightly sweet "chili ancho honey glaze." For dessert, don't pass up the very light, non-greasy sopapillas, accompanied by strawberry puree, cajeta and honey dipping sauces.
Let's say you have the sudden need to throw a party for 50 at your home and most of the guests are from the East Coast where the chance of them experiencing genuine Tex-Mex is not only unlikely, it's unheard of. You are short on time, and your spouse is no damn help, so you call Pappasito's Cantina and book the evening and food and watch as they do the rest. On the appointed evening, they swoop in, set up tables, chairs, festive decorations. They man a frozen margarita machine, which you... More »
The spinach and artichoke queso at Pappasito's Cantina is the best of two very different worlds. We've had some pretty decent spinach and artichoke dip, and we've had some pretty decent queso. But never, until Pappasito's added this appetizer to its menu, have we had the two served up as one big tasty dish. It's a great combination, and Pappasito's does a fine job with it. The creamy queso is served with crunchy corn tortilla chips, strong and sturdy enough to stand up to the thick dip,... More »
Like many quintessential Texas burger joints, this place started out as a convenience store. The grocery opened in 1939, and when owner and head cook Eydie Prior was growing up, her parents really sold groceries. But it was the hamburgers that brought in the crowds, and so they took out the store shelves and put in some tables. Today, Lankford Grocery is a homey restaurant with a rural vibe in a part of town where all the old buildings have been leveled and replaced with towering townhouses. The dining room is enclosed by garage doors. The smoking section is on a former driveway where two picnic tables are adorned with orange marigolds growing out of coffee cans. Every couple of months, Eydie goes on a decorating binge and decks the place out with a seasonal theme.
They have the best burger in Houston hands-down. Old-school mom and pop shop. Always super crowded at lunch, but well worth the wait. Not the best place for a big group. The indoor/outdoor seating is very limited.
Pretty much my favorite place for tex-mex!! Yea yea its a chain, but damn good. Aaand they just added Modelo Especial's on tap and serve them in frosted schooners. LOVE!
Call it Shakespeare in modern garb. Over the past several years, Hollywood presented us with Othello set on a high school basketball court, Hamlet wandering the aisles of a Blockbuster store, Romeo and Juliet cowering from the prying lenses of... More »
