Description

There are few restaurants in this world that offer food so good, you're willing to eat it standing up. Papo Llega y Pon, winner of a New Times Best of Miami award for best pork sandwich in 2009, is one of those places. More of a wraparound sandwich counter than an actual restaurant, it's worth checking out no matter how far you live from the Allapattah landmark. Opened by Papo 32 years ago, Papo Llega y Pon is now run by his daughter Julia who hasn't changed it much because, she says, "When something ain't broke, why try to fix it?" A constant flow of customers is a testament to the fact that everything at Papo's works just fine. The pan con lechon (pork sandwich) consists of delicious, mojito-marinated shredded pork on perfectly made Cuban bread. You gotta have it all the way - with onions and hot sauce - for the complete experience. And you can order it multiple ways, depending on your appetite and budget. For $4 you can get a six-incher; for just a dollar more you can upgrade to 12 inches. Or, you can order your pan con lechon on a half ($6) or whole ($12) loaf of Cuban bread. Wash it all down with a mamey milkshake ($3) or natural juice ($2.50) for a perfect meal.

It's easy to drive past, and even if you do see it, you wouldn't assume delicious lunch foods are hawked from this spot. Simple, uncomplicated pan con lechón doesn't fit the profile. Nevertheless, Papo Llega y Pon serves one king-hell $5 pork... More »
