Description

CLOSED - Everything modern-day, retrofitted restaurants may try to evoke Papa Fabarre's just is. Not just old-fashioned but downright old, this weekday lunchery inside the downtown Macy's is mostly a best-kept secret for the office crowd. The food -- short-order fare like burgers, sandwiches, French fries out of a bag, plus a couple offbeat things like French onion soup and liver -- can be decent, but the food isn't why you go. You go for the pressed-tin ceiling and the ceiling fans that work on an exposed belt-and-pulley system, for the red-velvet booths (designated "Tables for Ladies" by a hanging sign) offset by heavy green curtains, for the gilded cash register behind the bar that's no longer in use -- and because the service is attentive and warm to a fault. An absolute treasure.

  • 2010 | Best Power Lunch

A power lunch doesn't have to take place at the poshest spot in town. In fact, power lunches might best be undertaken in more subtle surroundings. Like at Papa Fabarre's. Located on the second floor of the downtown Macy's, tucked behind the menswear department, Papa Fabarre's practically screams discretion. Not only does the eatery offer high-backed booths, but said booths are equipped with privacy curtains. The menu isn't anything to write home about (the restaurant is known for its French... More »

  • 2005 | Best Place to Eat Out Alone

The Great American Novel is waiting to be written from behind the green velvet curtains that frame the row of booths in Papa Fabarre's. That is where St. Louis' next literary giant will begin to assume his or her place in line behind William Burroughs, Maya Angelou and Jonathan Franzen, scribbling scripture in solitude between bites of a fried-fish sandwich and spoonfuls of the Famous French Onion Soup. The author-in-the-making, perfectly at ease eating solo in a place like this, will revel... More »

    Déjà Q's

When I walked into Spyglass on the Park for the first time, I felt a creeping suspicion that I'd been there before. This was partially because, in a technical sense, I had. About a year ago I reviewed Q's Sports Bar & Grill, the last occupant of... More »

    A Farewell to Fabarre's?

Everybody remembers Papa Fabarre's. For me Papa Fabarre's is the Wedgewood Cafeteria, a bygone restaurant in downtown Montclair, New Jersey, where we used to go for fancy dinners when I was a kid. Even though the food was dished out by old ladies... More »
