This charming restaurant is on a corner just a few blocks from the beach in the Outer Sunset. Outerlands' simple wood tables and chairs, open kitchen, and service - you order at a counter and collect your own silverware - imply casual fare, but that isn't the case. The American cooking is sophisticated, even when it's a soup-and-sandwich lunch. Wonderful levain bread is baked fresh daily, as are the desserts. Choose from about a dozen frequently changing offerings at dinner, including fresh and inventive salads, baked macaroni and cheese, and cassouletlike bean dishes. The brief wine list is mostly organic and Biodynamic. Sunday brunch features baked eggs and a savory, puffy Dutch pancake served with bacon, and is deservedly popular.
