Osaka's Chef Thomas Wakasugi is a Japanese classicist with a unique twist. Though he was born in Japan, his sushi experience has all been acquired in Houstonm, and is on display on Lower Westheimer in Montrose. And his soft-shell crawfish, sweet shrimp and raw beef-like toro creations all suggest that he has developed a knack for fitting Japanese sushi to the Texan palate.
Bright red and streaked with fat, the large slab of raw meat glistens invitingly. It looks like a quarter-inch-thick slice of raw filet mignon. But it's toro, the fatty underbelly meat of the bluefin tuna. I bite off as much as I can chew. It... More »
Great freebies-appetizers and ice cream (Green Tea and Plum) are usually offered.
The best and freshest Sushi around! I like it because it has a cozy atmophere, dim lighting and it's a great place for a date or birthday dinner. The people that work there are super nice and they always give complimentary dishes to try. I would recommend the Caterpillar Roll and Kirin Ichiban. It's a must try in the Westheimer/Montrose district.
It's refreshing when you find a place that's as genuinely comfortable as it is delicious, and that's exactly our experience at Osaka. The menu at this diminutive Japanese joint isn't mind-blowing, but it's consistently refreshing, with delicious salmon, shrimp, eel and tuna offered in creative combinations, all at reasonable prices. You'll find the standbys on the sushi list, plus a bunch of more adventurous rolls that expertly play with textures and flavors. Try one of the outstanding bento... More »
Nestled into a small Montrose-area strip mall, this place has been a favorite of neighborhood patrons for some time. Osaka serves up some of the largest and freshest pieces of sashimi a person can find in the city. The salmon is always so magically fresh, you can't believe it's served at a sushi restaurant in Houston. But if you prefer rolls, they have you more than covered. The menu is filled with unique house items like the Osaka roll or the crunch roll, a spicy one that's covered with... More »
It's the dish that sushi lovers and aficionados test any spot by: toro, or fatty tuna. Specifically, it's the cut of fatty meat along the fish's belly. A bad cut yields junk; a precise cut offers perfectly marbled flavor and a buttery texture. You'll never be disappointed by the toro at Osaka Japanese Restaurant, which serves the market's best tuna to a loyal clientele. The Montrose restaurant also boasts excellent offerings of sashimi (especially yellowtail tuna), consistently the best in... More »
