The best of the pancake mega-chains, Original Pancake House (founded in Portland in 1953) has built its empire on a Dutch baby, a baked pancake as big as a dinner plate, with crisp 4-inch-high sides and an eggy, poofy center. And yes, the pancake is that good, especially with lemon juice and powdered sugar on top. The house's knotty-pine paneling and country china help create a clean but not anonymous atmosphere. A Scandinavian tinge to the menu shows up in kijafa crepes filled with cherries simmered in sweet Danish wine. The rest of the breakfast fare is solid (ethereal pancakes, creamy eggs, boiled-and-then-fried hash browns); however, the bacon waffle scores three stars for ingenuity, two stars for bacon, and one star for mealy waffle.
