Built as a movie theater in 1927, the Oriental Theater showed films daily for decades, but it hit a rough patch in the ’50s, during the flight to the suburbs. In an effort to boost attendance in the ’60s, the theater was updated with plush seating, new carpeting, fresh paint and a bigger projection screen. That screen soon went dark, however, and over the next few decades, the Oriental slid into disrepair. Although a few attempts were made to revitalize the space in the ’90s, none of the owners had the vision or staying power to capitalize on the theater's substantial assets. But in 2005, new owners took over, gave the venue an overdue facelift and started bringing in a steady and diverse stream of national and local acts.

Scott LaBarbera has a very diverse booking policy at the Oriental Theater, and he and his team have brought in some impressive acts, including Crime and the City Solution, Dead Prez and Woven Hand. Part of what makes these shows such a rich experience is the projection screen that occupies the entire back wall. With it, even local bands on a small budget can turn an otherwise standard show into a multimedia extravaganza. Using the entire back wall makes for an immersive environment than can... More »
Due to a restrictive agreement for a show they'd played a few nights before, the members of 3OH!3 were unable to promote their performance at a Sims Snowboard-sponsored event at the Oriental in January. While this was a shame for the duo's rabid fans as well as the Oriental's owners -- especially considering that the act had sold out the Gothic the previous Saturday -- the show was a rare treat for the audience, who'd only expected to watch an endless parade of kids snowboarding... Promotions can be a nasty business. The competition is rabid, cutthroat and full of enough shit-talking to make Simon Cowell cringe. So who ever thought that rival promoters could actually work together instead of against each other? To prove that harmonious unions are always better than pretentious bidding wars, the heads behind the Oriental Theater have teamed up with the infamous Deadhead Bianchi Brothers -- who run the Sancho's/Dulcinea's/Cervantes'/Quixote's empire -- to form a totally... Taking over one of those old, defunct theaters and turning it into something grand is a common fantasy. It's much less common that people actually do it. Why? Because many of these places are decaying pieces of crap that are fraught with dangers economic, psychological and physical. The contentious neighborhood-association meetings alone have sent many a wannabe theater owner to the nuthouse. When Scott LaBarbera and other partners began throwing shows in the Oriental Theatre last fall, it... More »
