OC Weekly's Description
The Santa Ana Zoo is in Prentice Park. Itâs most famous for a provision in its deed that it always must keep at least 50 monkeys on the premisesâif itâs any less, the Zoo must disband and the city must sell the property to the highest bidder and face âeternal shame in hell,â per the deed. Feral pigs, giant turkeys and lemurs, oh my! Santa Ana Zoo is a virtual haven for people who love staring at animals in cages. And for those of you out there who really like to pet these creatures of the wilderness, The Crean Family Farm is on the premises, complete with petting zoo and fun animal facts. You can feed the sheep and the goats. But whatever you do, don't feed the ducks! And there are also a couple of anteaters that were the subject of a lame political battle a couple of years ago.
This Zoo was founded in 1952 by Joseph Prentice, who requested at least 50 monkeys be kept at all times. It has since expanded to nearly 20 acres, offering a rain forest exhibit, several rare and endangered species, a walk-through aviary, a train ride, a Conservation Carrousel, a children’s zoo, an education amphitheater and classrooms, and much more!
Roam the rainforest, trek through the aviary, relax by the butterfly garden or on the deck enjoying the waterfall at Amazon's Edge, and feed goats and sheep in the children’s zoo, the Crean Family Farm.
The Zoo is an exciting place for kids of all ages, and is an educational institution great for observing primate behavior. Catch an animal show on the weekend, investigate the many botanicals on exhibit, or come out for one of the Zoo's signature special events.
The Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park is the only AZA certified facility in Orange County, and participates in several Species Survival Programs (SSP) with international zoos.
We also have a number of animals that are rescued, or could not survive in the wild.
The Santa Ana Zoo features picnic areas and Knowlwood Cafe restaurant, and unique gifts can be found at the Treetop Toys gift store.
Rental areas are available for a birthday parties and special events.
Conveniently located just 10 minutes from Disneyland off the 5 freeway, The Santa Ana Zoo is one of the coolest, most tranquil, family-friendly places to hang out with friends in Orange County.
Tips from foursquare
Great for small kids
Bring and pay with cash. $3.54 per transaction if you pay with your card.
Nice place to see some animals....lots of tagging on the bamboo gotta love urban plant defacement
The train may seem cheesy but it takes you by some enclosures that aren't accessible from the paths!
Bring cash! $3.54 add on to Admission price if you use a debit/credit card. City of Santa Ana is taxing zoo patrons this way.
