OC Weekly's Description

Renata’s is a cafe at war with itself, knowing they must hew to the sub-spaghetti-fettucine-lasagna cartel in order to ensure the rent; those dishes, while fine, are better made elsewhere and cheaper. So stick to the dishes unfamiliar to our American knowledge of Italian food. While polenta is somewhat known, it’s definitely not usually conceived of as Renata’s polenta romana, perfectly formed blocks of the stuff standing over a shallow pool of a creamy sauce spiked with what tasted like Chianti—spectacular. There’s also a pasta dish, name unfamiliar to the Italian-American restaurant canon, with chunks of pancetta crisped like chicharrones—amazing.

This little hidden gem is one of the best Italian places, and one of the only Italian places in the Orange Circle. I love their manacoti, its amazing. Parking may be a bit of a hassle depending on what time of day you go, but almost everything in the circle is.

The gnocchi is amazing. Especially with the creamy marinara (pink) sauce. Also, if it's just you and one other person or you're going by yourself, try to get the table outside by the door. Best spot.

The Veal Picata and Eggplant Parmesan are my favorites. I love this place and the manager is the nicest guy around. He always has such a warm and welcoming smile.

    Yummy vegetable lasagna!

Great Service! Loved the freshly chopped Bruschetta. Stay away from the burnt Fried Zuchinni :-(
