This first American branch of a Japanese chain with reportedly over 100 locations in Tokyo alone specializes in set meals called teishoku. What this means is that every large entrée comes with an assortment of side dishes, often including rice, soup, green salad, steamed orange squash, seaweed salad, and chwanmushi – the light Japanese custard. Favorite entrées of ours ran to tonkatsu pork cutlets, Korean-leaning hot pots, and the “hamburg” – a bun-less Teutonic ground-meat patty smothered in enoki mushroom sauce. Skip the sashimi, but go for the Osaka-style pressed mackerel sushi in this labyrinthine space, which boasts a balcony eating area in the main dining room, very dramatic.
