A neighborhood restaurant in the best sense: appealing not just because it's there but because it compels you to return to see your neighbors and friends and what Vito Racanelli Jr. and his staff are dishing up. The pizzas are of the New York school: thin (but not too thin) crust, and lots of sour-tangy mozzarella. Especially tasty is a pizza with chicken smoked in-house, a rich, tangy barbecue sauce, roasted jalapeños, bacon, caramelized onion and cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. The menu includes hearty pasta favorites like spaghetti and meatballs, but consider the daily specials, where Racanelli really shows off his fine-dining chops.

Tucked away in a sea of one-way streets, brick houses and manicured lawns of the Southampton neighborhood lies a taste of Italian café fare. Onesto, which opened in 2008 and is owned and operated by mainstay restaurateurs the Racanellis, is an unassuming corner joint with no obvious flash or flair. But the simple patio, with its flickering strings of lights and roughly ten four-tops, provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of other St. Louis restaurant patios. Here nobody will... More »
Look, you can let the kids drag you to another grim fast-food joint or one of those arcade-type restaurants where pot-addled teens in rodent costumes redolent of 30 years of b.o. try to distract the tykes from the fact that the pizza they are eating has a crust made out of industrial-grade cardboard. Or you can introduce them to what a restaurant should be. No, you don't have to dress them up in their ill-fitting Easter suits and give them the Glare of Imminent Death whenever they say the... Onesto has been open for barely half a year, and already it's well on its way to becoming a St. Louis favorite for tasty pizzas, pastas and sandwiches. Word quickly got out that the restaurant, tucked away in a residential area of the Southampton neighborhood, was a gem. On a weeknight a table is fairly easy to snag, but on a Friday or Saturday, you'll have to wait. Here's the thing: Onesto makes this usually frustrating experience enjoyable. The friendly hostess will take your name, and you'll be asked if you'd like a drink. You won't be crammed into a teeming bar or onto an overstuffed bench, though, while you wait for your table. Onesto's waiting space is a glorious front patio (also home to outdoor seating). Take your Schlafly APA or glass of wine outside and have a seat or walk around on the lawn or sidewalk. You're bound to run into someone you know; even if you don't, the relaxed backyard-party atmosphere makes it easy to strike up a conversation with others. When, suddenly, your table is ready, you hesitate — because even though you can't wait to order a giant salad and dig into a pizza, at Onesto, the waiting isn't the hardest part; it's one of the reasons you return again and again.
Charming neighborhood, cute place.
This is a great South City Restaurant! Really good pizza but that's not it! They have tons of other great stuff!
