The roaring fire at the back of O'Malley's on Main Street adds that welcoming Irish-pub warmth, both literal and figurative. The bar offers a full complement of whiskeys, vodkas and Scotches, as well as a selection of beers on tap. Try a pint of the Smithwicks, a tasty Irish number rumored to be the oldest ale produced by the Emerald Isle. O'Malley's also covers all the bases of pub grub, with nachos, quesadillas and chicken wings on one side and Irish sausage rolls, corned beef, and bangers and mash on the other. The shepherd's pie comes with a slagheap of tasty mashed potatoes on top that utterly hides the stew from the light (and oxygen) of day.
The small stretch of land leading to the Seal Beach Pier has an excellent selection of bars to choose from. We like to start at one end and work our way down--the same way you would start with the most expensive bottle of wine and work your way to the cheapest. Begin the pub crawl at 320 Main for handmade, vintage-inspired gourmet cocktails--the Moscow Mule is a must. Then mosey to O'Malleys, an Irish pub known for its frosty beers and finely made shots, such as the Tic-Tac. After... More »
Oh, if only all bartenders could be like Jonathan Almanza. Beers would never get empty, shots would always be frosty cold--no one makes a Tic Tac like he does. Of all the bartenders we've ever met (and that's . . . well, it's a lot), he is by far the best--which must have something to do with his 11 years of experience at O'Malley's On Main, one of the finest Irish pubs around. If the music is especially good that night, chances are the tunes are coming from... More »
The regulars here aren't just regulars; they're more like tenants. Some fine folks have been known to frequent this Irish pub several times a day, and why wouldn't they? O'Malley's is, hands down, the best place to get a pint of frosty beer and a plate of hearty grub. (We love the Irish sausage rolls and Maggie's potato skins.) The typical Irish décor--lots of Guinness signs--is taken up a notch by a beautiful wooden bar, cozy fireplace and quaint... More »
Finally. A bartender you don’t have to flag down when your glass is empty. In fact, you probably won’t even see the bottom of your glass by the time you’ve got another cocktail waiting. Thank you, Rick; with you, the thirsty find solace. Charming and attentive, Rick has been working the bar scene since long before he was of legal drinking age (relax, he started out as an O’Malley’s busboy), and serving parched customers has become second nature, not to mention a... First, get your mind out of the gutter--it is not that kind of buttery nipple. Second, almost every bartender knows (or should know) how to make this, but if they don't, be prepared to be met wi... More »
Illustration by Bob AulIrish eyes have done little smiling this fall, as Notre Dame's gridiron gang suffers through another mediocre season and supposed savior Tyrone Willingham is proving to be more Gerry Faust than Ara Parsegian. Even worse,... More »
Photo by Jeanne RiceThis I know: every person who writes about restaurants—even the most persnickety snob—harbors a deep and abiding love for some form of cheesy, greasy, non-gourmet, critically irrelevant food. My own affection is for pub grub,... More »
