CLOSED Large portions of well-cooked, hearty, yet delicately flavored food await you at the only Polish restaurant in San Francisco that we know of, which is therefore something of a local treasure. The cozy storefront is decorated with mismatched antiques, a comfy setting for meals of bigos (hunter's stew), Krakovian cutlet (chicken breast, ham, and Swiss cheese, breaded and fried), and the matchless "sourdough soup," aka white borscht, a chunky brew full of sliced kielbasa, potatoes, onions, and carrots.
The friend who brought us here confessed that he'd eaten at Old Krakow many times before he tried this dish, which didn't sound appealing to him; yet once tasted, it became not just his favorite soup, but also the main reason for repeat visits.
