Old Jerusalem steps out of the usual Middle Eastern comfort zone by offering 20 or so dishes rarely seen around here, including mossabaha, a dressed-up version of hummus; molukhia, an earthy soup made from a green vegetable of the same name long-simmered with lamb; bamia, lamb shank braised with okra in tomato sauce; and the house specialty, kunafa, a warm dessert of soft, buttery, delicately spiced goat cheese topped with syrup-soaked shredded phyllo dough and toasted pistachios. The menu also includes good versions of standard dishes such as baba ganoush, tabbouleh, kebabs, and schawerma. No alcohol is served. Prices at this Mission District restaurant are reasonable and service is friendly.
