Carefully put down the Nintendo controller. Your Mario Kart addiction is officially uncool. Yeah, we know it's super fun and that you're really good at Grand Prix mode. Shut up. Instead of sitting like a lump on the futon/bean bag/other sad... More »

    Brake-Fast

It’s all but a fact -- compared to moms, dads get the short end of the stick when it comes to their designated day of the year. Not only are their cheap kids spending less money on dear old dad, but there’s also a 75 percent chance they’re... More »

  • 2012 | Best Go Karts

We haven't broken out the measuring tape, so we'll have to take Octane Raceway's word that it's the largest indoor kart-racing facility in the United States. It certainly looks large. Even the check-in area is big. Two race tracks can hold 50 drivers at a time. Still, time does seem to slow down between races, while we're waiting for our next race time to come up. We have to be patient because we know we'll get our 12 minutes on the track, same as everyone else. Twelve minutes of sheer... More »

  • 2010 | Best Go-Kart Racing

We bruised our spine the first time we went to F1 -- that's how addicting the place is. We overdid it, clearly, and might do so again. Luckily, the raceway wasn't crowded when we showed up at 11:30 on a Sunday morning. Minutes later, we had slipped on a helmet and were strapped into a kart. The burst of adrenaline came seconds later as we slid into the first curve after the straightaway. When the race came to an end 14 screeching laps later, we got right back in line for our second go.... More »

  • 2008 | Best Go-Kart Racing

All go-karts are not created equal. It takes just one trip to F1 Race Factory to learn this. For starters, the go-karts at F1 peak at about 45 miles per hour and handle like mini-Porsches. Racers don aerodynamic helmets, racing jumpsuits, and gloves. Once they're suited up, racers can choose from two air-conditioned indoor tracks, which occupy about a third of the 113,000-square-foot warehouse facility (actually the carcass of a former Sam's Club). You know a kart-racing operation is... • 2004 | BEST INDOOR RACING

Like just about everything else once dismissed as silly kid stuff, go-karts have raced into the mainstream of grown-up extreme sports. The F1 Race Factory, bordering the Tempe gateway just south of 48th Street and Washington, requires a valid driver's license to race its modified European karts -- each outfitted with a speedy Honda GX 270cc motor and Yokohama racing slicks -- and serves beer and wine in its Trackside Grill (although tipsy karters are subject to Breathalyzer tests). Plugged... More »
