  • 2006 | Best Nocturnal Illuminations

There's something primal and pyrotechnically mesmerizing about the bonfires that light up Ocean Beach most every weekend night. Like a string of flickering lights, they stretch along the coast, illuminating the sky and the sand and acting as leaping, smoky beacons to the great wet beyond. Unfortunately, the bonfires have inspired more than a few incidents of neighborhood vandalism and environmental damage -- a decision on banning fires altogether is expected in June. So the next time you... More »

  • 2006 | Best Underappreciated Neighborhood

A real neighborhood is starting to take root out at Ocean Beach. In a little over a year, the 'hood's anchors (Sea Breeze Cafe, Other Avenues, Thanh Long, and Java Beach) have been joined by a juice shop, Judahlicious; a tiny dining spot with great homemade cheesecake, Mango Medley; a surf shop that puts on indie-rock shows, Mollusk (see page 75); and an organic vegan restaurant, the Feel Real Cafe. It's even got a store peddling an $8,000 all-hemp mattress! But the area beyond the Outer... More »

  • 2001 | Best Spot for Serious Surfers

Pacifica is fine for newbies and Santa Cruz is great if you have the time for a drive, but for serious local riders the broad, ever-changing wave field of Ocean Beach can't be beat. It can be tough to paddle out, but once you do, the feeling of freedom is like nothing else. Because its riptides -- the surface currents that carry riders away from the shore -- change all... More »

I’ve never surfed in the Bay Area because during the season it’s hard to get on the board. Ocean Beach has a lot of great waves, but I haven't had a chance to surf there yet.
