So you want to go bowling, but the standard greasy, inedible alley fare isn’t up to snuff. How can you possibly keep slaughtering pins if you don’t have the energy to throw a 15-pound ball? At Let It Roll Bowl in Sunnyslope, there are plenty of lanes, a lounge with full bar and psychedelic art, and most important of all, Oaxaca Restaurant. You can pick from reasonably priced standards like tacos, burritos, and enchiladas. But why would you when you can also have regional specialties like molotes (deep-fried fritters stuffed with potatoes and chorizo) and tlayuda (Mexican pizza)? None of it costs more than $8, and the entrées include black or red mole, stuffed chiles, gorditas, and green or red ribs. In addition to the outstanding mole, what really makes Oaxaqueños happy are the chapulines, or edible crickets, with a texture like popcorn and a flavor reminiscent of tangy salt and vinegar chips. On the other end of the spectrum, Oaxaca Restaurant also serves typical American food like pizza and burgers because it is, after all, in a bowling alley.
Ah, the bowling alley snack bar -- a place that's never, ever as good as you want it to be. Especially at those corporate houses that dominate the kegling landscape. The corner of 12th Street and Dunlap Road doesn't exactly look like a hotspot for Mexican food, but tucked within Let It Roll Bowl is the new location of the old Mini Mercado Oaxaca.
