There was a big boom in cupcakeries over the past couple years, in rather fly-by-night operations run by people who thought it might be fun selling cupcakes to soccer moms in the suburbs. Unsurprisingly, most of these were awful, and most of them closed soon after opening. But Nomelie is the exception. Not only is it well-run and professional, but the cupcakes that come out of this kitchen are amazing -- not too big, not too small, not too sweet, not too weird. And considering that the house runs specials every day, there's always something on the board worth eating by the dozen.

I work just above this place, so I was intrigued when they finally opened. At first I really hated it - the cupcakes were mediocre, at best; dry, bland, basically something I could have made with a $2 pack of baking mix. I couldn't believe they were charging nearly $3 per cupcake, even if the frosting was pretty good. So I didn't go back for about a year. I'm really glad I've recently re-discovered the place. The cupcakes are excellent: moist, sweet, full of complementary flavors. They have very innovative daily selections, and favorites every day, as well as a few "secret flavors" now and then. I'm still unconvinced concerning the $3 price tag (you do get bargains when you purchase more cupcakes), but I guess it's hit-and-miss sometimes. The cake itself is delicious, but short of "top grade," if only by a little. The atmosphere is very nice inside the cafe, and when the weather is good, I would definitely recommend grabbing a few cakes, maybe a cup of tea or coffee (or milk!!), and sitting out on the patio to have a chat. The staff have always been extremely kind and helpful, and also kid-friendly. Bottom line: a bit pricey, but worth it every once in a while. Delicious cupcakes, good atmosphere.
