Description

After spending several years as a fundamentalist church and bookstore, the historic Nile Theater has made a triumphant return as one of the Valley's premier concert halls. With both its rough-and-tumble (which contributed to the Nile's being shut down in 2002) and God-fearing days firmly in the past, this all-ages establishment in downtown Mesa has quickly re-established itself as a go-to spot to catch up-and-coming national acts and established local bands. Since reopening in 2010, the joint has already played host to such acts as BrokeNCYDE, Against Me! and The Aquabats, as well as local power pop favorites The Maine and The Summer Set. The interior of the Nile, which opened in 1924, is rustic without feeling antiquated, while the sound and acoustics are excellent, and the floor is even carpeted (which is an unusually classy touch for a concert venue). With its back-alley entrance, patrons may feel as if they're visiting a speakeasy, but, alas, once inside, the hardest drink available is a Mountain Dew.

  • 2012 | Best Venue for Local Acts

Few venues can boast as impressive a second act as The Nile Theater, in downtown Mesa. Since reopening under the direction of Mantooth Group in 2010, the venue has spearheaded a kind of downtown revival, hosting punk and hardcore in the sweaty and utterly rock 'n' roll basement (re-dubbed The Underground as opposed to just "the Nile Basement") and singer/songwriter/indie fare in the neighboring (and couch-equipped) Lo-Fi Coffee. Punk and hardcore legends -- like The Bouncing Souls and... More »

  • 2010 | Best Comeback

In the mid- to late '90s, the Nile Theatre in Mesa was the shiznit. The indie concert venue on Main Street was one of the places for local music fans. The biggest names in rock, punk, hardcore, and hip-hop hit up the Nile, and locals bands aplenty performed in the basement. Unfortunately, the Nile was shut down in 2002 after issues with the city of Mesa. Then, in January, employees of indie concert promoter the Mantooth Group just happened to ride by the then-vacant building as the rental... More »
