This cool, glam, retro-dotcom nightspot serves up classy Japanese small plates and cutting-edge sushi, but what the place is really known for are its 400 varieties of single-malt scotch, the biggest selection on the Pacific Coast. That bottle of 50-year-old MacPhail's will set you back $4,000 or so, but for a smaller stipend you can settle for a skillfully concocted Rob Roy, sazerac, or other whisky-licious cocktail. Izakaya snacks like taro fries, hamachi-stuffed shiitake, and seaweed-wrapped Kobe burgers are pretty tasty too. There's a private red-plush hideaway upstairs for the more elite tipplers.
With Scotch whisky and American whiskey enjoying so much adoration, it's getting easier to find more than just Jack, Jim, and Johnny in most Bay Area bars.
